Mimi Lee

DIRECTOR, CO-WRITER, AND producer

Mimi Lee is an independent filmmaker based in Los Angeles, CA. As a child of immigrant parents, she is drawn to stories that humanize the complicated and layered characters within marginalized communities. Her narratives often center women in flawed societies, and she explores common themes in her work surrounding racial identity and mental health. Her latest film "Moonchild" is a Coming-of-Age Sci-Fi Thriller about a young woman who uncovers a dangerous family secret on her journey to visit her late father's grave. Moonchild received "Best Thriller" at USC's First Look in 2020, screened at American Cinematheque's "AAPI Women Night of Shorts", and is distributed by DUST.

Apart from directing creative content in film and VR, Lee also explores the world of visual storytelling through her work in music videos and commercials. Her music video SOIF is about a woman who searches for catharsis from her traumatic past and revenge on the patriarchal system that enabled it. SOIF received "Best Music Video" at the Oscar-Qualifying Urbanworld Film Festival in 2019.

Lee is a 2022-2023 Director Fellow for MTV's First Time Director's Initiative with MTV Entertainment Studios. She also received her MFA in Directing at USC's School of Cinematic Arts. Her short screenplay, YAOGUAI, was on Coverfly’s Top 1% in Short Genre projects, recognized by Cinequest, Screencraft, Outstanding Screenplays, and Filmmatic Horror Screenplay Awards, and a top 10 finalist for Killer Shorts Horror Short Screenplay Competition. She is also currently developing her Drama Thriller feature, BLACK SHEEP, which also recently advanced as a Semifinalist in the Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Competition.
